(C) On this itinerary B=breakfast, L=lunch, C=cocktails, and D=dinner
Sept 16 ~ A guided walk, cocktails with a local artist, and Sarah’s first collage lesson: linea We start today with a guided walk around Piazza San Marco with a Venice native, and then head off the beaten path to see where “regular” Venetians live. Next, we begin our first collage lesson with Sarah, today concentrating on line. We explore some of the city’s paper shops to gain inspiration from Venice’s fabulous papers, maps, etchings and drawings. We will also start one or two long-term projects – an artist journal, pocket collages, and/or postcards from your experience here that become even more interesting when mailed to a friend. Tonight we visit a local artist to enjoy cocktails and experience first-hand the life of a working artist in Venice. (B,C)
Sept 17 ~ Fortuny, master of design and pattern, and Sarah’s second collage lesson: disegno Today we visit the atmospheric studio and residence of one of Venice’s most illustrious citizens, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, a theatrical set designer, fashion designer, lighting designer, painter, and photographer. His palace studio is now a museum we will mine for inspiration. Sarah’s second collage lesson today will focus on pattern, one of Fortuny’s strong points. We also explore the role of patina and how objects collect physical evidence of the passage of time. We share dinner together tonight at a classic local restaurant near the opera house. (B,D)
Sept 18 ~ Exploring the northern lagoon, and Sarah’s third collage lesson: colore We travel by private historic boat into the northern lagoon today. Our first stop is Murano, where we visit a glass factory to see firsthand the alchemical process of blowing glass, before heading to the Torcello, a quiet, somewhat wild island that is barely inhabited today. Our final stop this morning is Burano, whose brightly-painted houses will serve as our inspiration today as Sarah shares her insight on color. Lunch will be a picnic on Burano as we work al fresco with Sarah on our collages. (B,L)
Sept 19 ~ The fish market, the Peggy Guggenheim, and Sarah’s 4th lesson: collage fotografico We gather early this morning to visit the historic Rialto fish and vegetable markets, an explosion of pattern and color. We will photograph everything we can here and then drop off our images at a local shop for printing. In the meantime, we visit the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, one of Sarah’s favorite spots, and enjoy lunch together here overlooking the garden. Then we pick up our prints and dive into Sarah’s fourth lesson, photographic collage. After a full day together, the evening is yours to explore or rest. (B,L)
Sept 20 ~ Gondolieri and Sarah’s fifth lesson: grafica Today we examine the culture of the gondoliere, a profession that is unique to Venice. We start today at the place where the gondolieri shop for all things striped. That means shirts and scarves mostly, plus their special black shoes that grip the deck of the gondola and their straw hats with ribbons of black or red. Next, we learn to row like Venetians! Who knows what inspiration will strike as we ply the back waterways of Venice? After a quick stop at a favorite Venetian coffee bar, we are ready for Sarah’s fifth lesson, using graphic elements in your designs. Late afternoon is yours for exploring and shopping. (B)
Sept 21 ~ Venetian costumes, and Sarah’s sixth lesson: volume e trama Our last day in Venice starts with a private visit to one of the top costume ateliers in Venice. The owner will explain her design philosophy to us, and may even let us try on a costume or two. After this visual feast, we work with Sarah on our sixth and final lesson: volume and texture. This afternoon you will have time for last-minute shopping and exploring before our final gathering to show each other our creations from the past week over cocktails. We will share final night dinner together as we celebrate our creative week in Venice! (B, C, D)
